Smell
Mole wrote this about our 1993-96 project on her own website, and I can’t find any better way to tell the story, so I just quote it here for you:
“Smell” – I guess Henry came up with this name, looking for something short and brief. Jörn’s “A lot of cherry” had split shortly before due to Jason’s return to the states – soon after a remarkable gig in the “Trockendock” in Hamburg with an accellerating drummer whose name I’ve forgotten and my brother as guest musician on guitar. A short one-handed solo part with an Accordion was in for me, which was a reason to finally buy a bass guitar and get a good start for a musicians life.
Jörn and I started a new project as a duo. Soon after that I chatted up Henry – and he went into it as a very capable guitar player for the band. First grade song material and background vocal were delivered on top and “Smell” was born.
With Stefan as second on guitar and Benny on drums we played the legendary 5 songs gig at the Christmas party of the “Große Freiheit 36″ crew. Legendary not only because of the punk-song “Erwin” about a casualty at the docks “and his faithful wife”, but because of the ringlet overknees, Yeah!
Unfortunately this was the last concert of “Smell”. Benny preferred playing pure brit pop from then on, Jörn went on becoming a successful promoter – for instance organising the “Schüttel was du hast”-parties (at which, in fact, Screaming Fools played an unforgettable gig in the famous Kaiserkeller) – and Henry and me founded “Everpure”.
